I spent years believing technical mastery would secure my place in the creative industry.
Back in the early 2000s, I obsessively completed every tutorial on fxphd, determined to become the most technically proficient artist possible (at that time it was mainly Flame and Nuke).
I thought knowing the software in and out would make me indispensable.
I was wrong.
While technical skills got me in the door at key moments, this fixation on tools actually held me back at times.
I was so focused on “knowing it all” that I sometimes missed opportunities to learn and grow in more meaningful ways.
I was reminded of that during my recent conversation with Arne, a filmmaker and VFX artist who’s crafting an innovative math show for children.
When tools like Sora emerged, threatening to automate much of what he’d spent a decade mastering, his initial reaction was fear – mirroring the fear we all have inside, me included.
But what happened next was fascinating.
Instead of doubling down on technical skills or giving up entirely, Arne found a way to leverage AI tools in service of his creative vision and clients.
He’s not using AI to replace his artistry – he’s using it to enhance his storytelling capabilities.
The technology serves the story, not the other way around. For this conversation, the PNL “reframing” technique was one of the keys!
Now, this is exactly why I created Navigator.
After 15+ years supporting VFX teams on very demanding projects like Star Wars and Game of Thrones, I’ve learned that success in the creative industry isn’t just about mastering tools – it’s about developing the mindset to adapt and grow as the industry evolves.
Navigator is a 4-week program where I share the insights I wish I’d had when starting out.
We’ll explore how to:
- Position yourself effectively in today’s creative landscape
- Develop the mindset that makes you truly valuable to creative teams and businesses
- Navigate the integration of AI and new technologies
- Build a sustainable creative career that evolves with the industry
The 1st cohort starts February 1st, 2025, with limited spots available.
So If you’re looking to enter the creative industry or transition within it, I’d love to help you avoid the mistakes I made and accelerate your journey to meaningful creative work.
For this initial cohort, I’m offering the program at no cost – all I ask is for your honest feedback to help shape its future.
Not for you? Please consider sharing this opportunity with someone in your network who’s looking to break into the creative industry.
